Statement 2022
My work explores how we perceive, organise, and translate visual information—how memory, imagination, and the subconscious shape the realities we create. Drawing is central to my practice, particularly its connection to writing and to the structural logic of maps.
Each painting begins with a dense field of repetitive marks in charcoal or pastel, recalling the rhythm of handwriting. This all-over linear pattern serves as a reservoir of potential forms. Through erasure, layers of oil paint, and shifts in colour, I extract shapes and structures from this initial pattern. I allow earlier layers to remain visible, emphasising the work’s development and the accumulation of thought.
I integrate symbols and motifs derived from vintage and digital maps, architectural plans, manuscripts, diagrams, and natural patterns. These fragments create points of reference within the composition, prompting associations and suggesting open-ended narratives.
My aim is to construct visually complex surfaces that invite viewers to slow down, explore, and question. The work balances intuitive mark-making with a cartographic sensibility, merging personal expression with a multi-layered interpretation of the world.
