Statement 2020
I am interested in how we perceive and process visual information, in our ability to generate new realities and how memory
and the subconscious are linked to the creation of a work of art.
My fascination with maps and my constant engagement with drawing and its relation to writing,
brought about a process of inventing forms that has become the basis of my work.
My paintings begin with a repetitive pattern all over the surface, made with charcoal or pastel,
reminiscent of handwriting. This elaborate drawing serves as an endless source of forms brought to the surface by the painting process.
In this chaotic linear web I look for shapes and structures which I further develop by erasing lines or adding oil paint and colors.
I often allow the previous layers to show through, in order to illustrate the development of a piece.
Finally I add shapes and symbols derived from vintage and digital maps, architectural plans, manuscripts, diagrams,, patterns and textures found in nature,
in an attempt to create associations and a visual narrative.
I want the work to have variety, to raise questions and combine personal expression
with a complex pictorial version of the world.
